A Kingspan Solar High Efficiency Pump Station provides a low energy circulator for the solar system. In addition, most features that are required in hydronic systems are provided on the pumping station, making the piping of the system much faster than if all the devices had to be plumbed by hand. The pump operation is controlled by the solar controller, which will activate the pump when there is energy to be gained from the sun.
The default setting for the pump is for external PWM control (Profile C – Solar). This can be confirmed by pressing the > button on the front of the pump. The LED’s will light in the pattern below:
We would note that the UPM3 Solar pump can also be used in a Constant Curve mode. This mode is similar to a fixed speed pump with a speed selection switch. The UPM3 can be set to one of 4 Constant Curves. To change to Constant Curve mode press and hold the > button for 2 seconds until the LED’s begin to flash. Pressing the > button will cycle through the setting selections. To select the first constant curve press the > button until the LED pattern below is visible.
This setting will be ok for the majority of solar systems as the UPM3 pump is more powerful than most older type solar circulation pumps. If the flow rate is too high with this setting then it should be adjusted using the flow setting valve available on most pump stations. If the flow rate is too low then it may be necessary to select a higher constant curve. The list of constant curve settings is shown below.
We would note that the only reason to change from PWM Control is if the Solar Controller is not PWM compliant.
